about

Sunbathing Through a Glass Screen is an album that draws on the excesses and fears of living in a precarious age. Ecstatic joy and anxious fear rub shoulders on each composition resulting in something catchy and intimidating at the same time. On this album Alexander makes prominent use of synth organs for the first time, giving his music the bright and energetic feel of early 70s American Minimalism.

The complete video accompaniment by visual artist and electronic musician Omar El Sadek explores the juxtaposition of organic and synthetic through writhing biomorphic forms that evolve cautiously across each piece.

Features double bass contributions by George Cremaschi of the Prague Improvisation Orchestra

"Theo Alexander's fifth long-player is about 'excess in a time of crisis', so for all the melancholy that pervades the Londoner's neoclassical timbres, 'Sunbathing Through a Glass Screen' dumps a welcome load of fury onto the genre. Red hot it is, too. [...] Alexander creates drama and poignancy using very little ammo - a piano, a tape loop, cello swipes and a throb of double bass. 'Bright-Eyed Hunger', a Reichian spin on Joe Hisaishi's soundtrack for 1993 yakuza film 'Sonatine' is a case in point."
(Electronic Sound Magazine)

"Sunbathing Through a Glass Screen is a pleasant surprise, even in its disconsolation. Theo Alexander’s compositions are imaginative and original yet find familiarity, evoking early ‘70s minimalism. There are so many layers to unearth, and the expressive soundscapes throughout offer a momentary reprieve from all the outside noise."

about

Theo Alexander London, UK

Chinese-British composer Theo Alexander writes energetic, intricate music using piano, tape loops and synthesisers. Preoccupied by themes of memory, repetition, and decadence, his music is often ecstatic, splicing melodic patterns together in complex and affecting structures of sound. His approach is driven by a desire to subvert the acoustic qualities of the piano with electronic counterparts. ... more
